Mike Forbes composed his first ever "Sonatina" for his main instrument: the tuba. This new work explores melodic versatility and extended harmony. The truly unique aspect of the work is how it "fits" the idiomatic elements of the tuba so well. The sonata-allegro first movement showcases the nimble fingers of the player and includes a cadenza,while the second movement is a hauntingly expressive chaconne. The third and final movement has mixed meter and boasts jocular melodies in a rondo form.
This work is published in hard-copy form from Editions BIM. There are different accompanimental versions for this work: 1) 2 Trumpets, Horn, and Trombone (e.g. a brass quintet with the tuba as the solo voice); 2) Trombone Quartet (or choir) (presented below in the YouTube clip) and 3) Tuba/Euphonium Quartet or Choir. Each of these different accompaniments is available in PDF format per request along with an order of the original work shown here.
