*Kaleidoscope for Tuba/Euph. Quartet & Band, by Mike Forbes
Kaleidoscope—a 10-minute, colorful work for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet and band—is comprised of essentially of three sections which are foreshadowed in the very beginning of the work. The first section, a driving dance in 10/8 gives the solo players introductions to play over a buoyant band accompaniment. The second, more lyrical section features to soaring beauty of the euphonium over complex and colorful harmonies. This section gives way to an aleatoric cadenza section featuring the soloists in cadenzi over their counterparts in the band. Lastly, the final section is a knee-slapping fugue, starting with the lowest instruments (baritone saxophone and tuba) floating all the way up to the highest instruments in the band. The full band gets in on the action to bring the work to bombastic close.
